1.  What is Senior Living?

A home for seniors needing help with activities of daily living (ADLs)  such as bathing, dressing, medication assistance, and meals.

Some senior living facilities have secured units to care for those individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and other related dementias.

2.  What are the benefits of Senior Living?

Increased socialization, a greater compliance with medication, 24 hour oversight and supervision, enhanced nutrition, and peace of mind.

3.  Who pays for Senior Living?

The most common form of payment in senior living is private pay, including long term care insurance. However, some senior living facilities do accept Social Security and Medicaid. It is best to check with the facility first.

4.  Does Medicare pay for Senior Living?

No. Medicare does not pay for room and board in senior living. Medicare Part B may cover the cost of services in senior living provided by a Home Health Agency such as therapy or skilled nursing services.

5.  Is Veterans Assistance available?

Veterans Assistance may be available for veterans and/or their surviving spouse that reside in senior living. You or your spouse must have had an honorable discharge and served at least one day during war time. To see if you qualify call the Veterans Hot Line toll free at 1-800-827-1000.

6.  Is the room furnished?

The room is furnished but we recommend bringing all or some of their own furniture from home to make the transition smooth. We encourage residents to hang pictures and artwork on the walls. Having familiar surroundings eases the move.

7.  Are meals provided? Are special diets available?

Yes, three meals a day plus snacks. All of our menus are approved by a licensed dietician. Meals are prepared on sight and is home style cooking. All meals are served restaurant style, with alternates always available. Special diets such as diabetic or low sodium are available. If you require a diet that requires the purchase of addition food such as gluten free or lactose intolerant a nominal fee is charged.

8.  What kinds of activities are provided?

Ask to see the activity calendar when you visit or request information. We try to provide a variety of activities based on the current resident population’s likes and interests. We provide a daily am exercise program followed by various other activities that stimulate the mind, body and soul. Trips to a local restaurants or the mall are always favorites. Invited guest such as music groups or scout troops are also favorites.

9.  Can I keep my own physician or do you provide one?

The answer in most cases is both. Many physicians will continue to follow their (patients) resident once they have move into senior living. Some facilities do provide a “house” doctor that will now follow their up care needs. Some house doctors will come to the facility to see the residents, which is an added convenience to both the resident and their family.

10.  Are care givers awake and available 24 hours a day?

Yes they are.


Things to look for during your tour:

  • The staff should know the residents by name.
  • Smiling faces on both the residents and the staff.
  • Do the residents seem to be content, happy, well groomed, clothes clean?
  • Is there a bad odor?
  • Ask to see a resident room that is currently occupied.
  • Talk to the staff, ask them how they like working there, and ask the resident’s how they like living there.
